Don’t Be a Statistic

When I entered college in the summer of 1998, I had one simple thought in my head:  Don’t be a statistic.  My teenage years were unstable, abusive, and marked by trauma I still carry in some ways today. I wanted out. I wanted distance from the chaos and a...

The Middle – A Story of Jonah

There is safety in the middle. There is equal space to each edge. It’s the perfect place to regroup and decide where to move next. In a time of peril nothing feels better than being in the middle of hug from a loved one, or in the corner of the couch wrapped in...

An Empty Chair

When families gather there is a general sense of routine. Aunt Janet brings the pies, Mom is responsible for the salad, and you can always count on Uncle Chris to crack a joke at the right time that fills the room with laughter. When we sit down to eat everyone...

God Bless America?

Annually, on the 4th of July we celebrate our country, it’s the day we became an independent nation and freedom is something to celebrate! Days like today it’s not uncommon to hear “God Bless America” or to see it printed on signs, T-shirts, or bumper stickers. In...

Slow and Sweet

There is a point when making my hot tea that I must slow down. It’s the dreaded honey drip. The viscosity and sweetness of the natural sweetener takes time. Sure I could speed it up by microwaving the gold goodness but maybe there is a lesson in the wait. The aroma of...

She Laughed

What if someone asked you to build a kit car, hike a local mountain range, or take over a large non-profit, what would you do? When something seems entirely impossible, I’m prone to roll my eyes or laugh. You certainly don’t mean me? You must be asking someone...

The Last Standing Flower

Our bodies somehow acclimate to the rhythm of the seasons. Summer was approaching its end, the daylight decreased and the shadows returned. Each year brings a new season of life. Kids start kindergarten with so many firsts. Then somehow only a few short years later we...

Making Me Strong

Strength is built thru struggle, consistency, and perseverance. I have a deep desire to teach my children that the struggle of life is a gift because each struggle makes you stronger. Learning is hard work and often involves failure. As a woman who adores success (and...

Aged Grief is Still Grief

Grandpa. He’s been gone just since I was 18. It’s hard to imagine sometimes that it’s been that long, but maybe I’m wondering how I got so grown up. I was his first grandchild and it’s well known to the rest of my cousins that I was his favorite. Recently, I was...

Rebuilding My Faith

I can recall the weather on the day I returned to church in 2015, the air was balmy and it was overcast. What I remember most was the quiet whisper in my ear that I didn’t belong. I sat by myself and knew no one. It was a small welcoming church, so it was definitely...
